Trailer VIN lookup

Look up a trailer by its VIN.

A trailer’s 17-character VIN tells you who built it, when, and how it was configured. On TrailerBook it can also show the trailer’s service history and appraisal record.

0/17

The 17-character VIN is on the compliance label, usually on the tongue or the front of the frame.

What a trailer VIN tells you

Manufacturer (characters 1–3)
Identifies the company that built the trailer. Some parent companies build several brands.
Attributes (characters 4–8)
The manufacturer’s code for the model, type, length, axles or other features.
Check digit (character 9)
A calculated character that catches typos. A VIN that fails the check has been entered or recorded wrong.
Model year (character 10)
A letter or number for the model year, e.g. M for 2021 or N for 2022.
Plant and serial (characters 11–17)
Where it was built and its unique serial number.

Where to find a trailer’s VIN

Look for the VIN on the compliance or certification label, usually on the tongue or the front of the frame, and on the trailer’s registration or title. They should match; if they don’t, find out why before you buy.

Common questions

Is a trailer VIN lookup free on TrailerBook?

Yes. Looking up a VIN is free and shows the trailer’s profile and specs. A full history report is available for trailers with enough verified service records.

Why doesn’t my trailer have a 17-character VIN?

Some older or homemade trailers use a shorter serial number instead. TrailerBook can still create a profile and appraisal for them.

Can a VIN lookup tell me if there’s money owed on a trailer?

Not yet. TrailerBook lien search is coming soon as a pay-per-search option. Until then, check with your provincial or state registry.
